Wireless networks have become very popular ways for people to connect to the Internet. Despite the popularity of wireless networks, not everyone takes the necessary precautions to protect their wireless networks. Wireless networks need to be protected in a number of ways to prevent others from “stealing” Internet and surfing the web under your Internet connection. Protection is also necessary because anyone who has access to the wireless network could gain access to a number of your personal files and information.
If you have a wireless network, here are some of the recommended ways to protect your wireless network from unauthorized access or hackers.
Password Protect
Not everyone that has a wireless network password protects the network. Passwords are the simplest form of protection for wireless networks. Only those that have the network password can gain access to the network.
Update Router Firmware
Firmware is software that is provided by the company that manufactures the router. It is not common to update a router’s firmware. In fact, many people only update the firmware when the router is installed or a power outage occurs. However, manufacturers create updates that could enhance the security of your wireless network. Firmware updates are available on the manufacturer’s website and are available for download.
Consider the MAC Wireless Filter
There is an option that comes with almost any wireless router that allows you to narrow down what wireless devices can access the router. By programming the MAC number—which all wireless cards come with and cannot be changed—into the MAC filter of a wireless router, it will prevent anyone who does not have permission from accessing the wireless connection.
Turn Off Remote Access
Many wireless routers will ask if you want to have remote access enabled. Make sure that you turn off any remote access options that come with your router as this will allow anyone to remotely access the network and possibly your computers.
