Starting a Home Office

If you are interested in working from home, you will need to have office space to work in. Working from home can be hard, especially because there are so many distractions that can occur. If you don’t have a room that you can make into your office, consider looking for a small space just big enough to fit a desk, chair and your computer.

Make sure the area you choose has access to wireless Internet and can get a good signal. There’s nothing worse than setting everything up only to realize you can’t get a good signal or a very slow one that prohibits you from fast file transfers using programs like FileZilla from the location you are in.

If you have family members that will be home during the day when you are, make sure you explain to them that you will be working from home and that you can’t be distracted during that time unless it’s an emergency. Make it clear to everyone that it is unprofessional to answer your phone while a screaming child or a loud television is on in the background. Too much background noise can also make it difficult to concentrate as well.

If there is room, try setting up your own business line. While many people work through email, some employers still prefer to speak directly with their employees on the phone if they can’t do so in person.

Once everything in your office is set up, you are then ready to get started. Get some free open source software like open office and File Zilla to save money.  Make business cards or even hand out flyers so that you can promote your business. While you may have to take low-paying projects at first, once people realize how good your work quality is they will start requesting you do more work for them.

While having a home-based business can be difficult, it doesn’t have to be. All it takes is a little work to get started and a lot of patience in the beginning.
