Let’s admit it, Wi-Fi is one of the coolest inventions ever made. Being able to watch Hulu in bed or surf the Internet from your TV makes technology more fun and useful for us all. But if you have yet to set up a wireless home network of you own, so you can take part in all that wireless goodness, take heart — it’s not that hard. And you’ll be up and surfing the Web in just a few minutes.
First of all, you have to have a high-speed or broadband internet connection (I’m not sure who uses dial-up anymore, but there may still be a few of you out there). You’ll also need a wireless router and a computer with Wi-Fi connectivity. Most laptops today have this ability. From there it’s just a matter of setting everything up right.
Unplug your modem. Your modem should have an ethernet connection on it. Disconnect the other end of the Ethernet cable from any other device it might be hooked to and plug it into the back of the wireless router — make sure the router is unplugged at this point as well. Now plug the modem back in and give it a few minute to reboot completely. Once the modem has rebooted completely, it’s time to plug in the wireless router.
The front of your router should have some blinking lights that indicate whether it is reading an internet signal from your modem and if that signal is being transmitted. If all has gone well to this point, you should be able to open your internet connections and see an available network.
As a default, many of these routers require a password, check your documentation to install your configuration software and obtain the default password. Using the configuration software, you should create a new network name and password.
Once that setup is done, you should be able to watch Desperate Housewives in your bed. Enjoy.
